LUCY IN THE SKY
A hand-built storybook castle on five private acres, ten minutes from downtown Austin
There is nothing else like it in Austin. Lucy in the Sky is an Old World storybook castle, built stone by stone into five wooded acres on the coveted hills of West Lake Hills. A compound of stone-and-stucco buildings under slate roofs, crowned by a copper-topped tower rising out of the oaks, it was designed as a whimsical retreat and integrated into the landscape with imaginative finishes and quiet, energy-efficient engineering throughout. You do not tour this house so much as fall into it. Game of Thrones and Harry Potter come to mind within the first few rooms, and the feeling does not fade.
THE HOUSE
A custom Tiffany-style stained-glass front door welcomes you inside, its jewel colors spilling across a flagstone entry beneath vaulted wood-beamed ceilings and Venetian-plastered walls. Just off the entry, an Old World parlor gathers around a hand-sculpted Green Man masonry hearth framed in travertine, where hundred-year-old antique doors display the courtyard through medieval glass. To the left waits the library, marble floors below a coffered ceiling in faux-embossed copper, wall-to-wall bookcases, mahogany windows, and an interior Juliet balcony that looks out over the great room. Its stained glass was made from two-hundred-year-old salvaged panes, and a steampunk-style rotating dual ceiling fan turns overhead.
The great room is a work of art you can stand inside. Cathedral ceilings carry salvaged Hemlock jackhammer trusses above two-inch Arizona Rosa flagstone, travertine wainscoting with carved stone edges rings the Venetian plaster, and an antique brass and alabaster chandelier casts its glow through the ornate stained glass that characterizes the home. A cultured stone hearth set with candlelight anchors the space, which opens to a vine-covered patio framed by dragon-themed wrought-iron railings. Tucked into a back corner, the owner's suite is a private retreat with a stone hearth, hemlock beams, and hand-scraped teak floors, opening to a fairy-tale flagstone patio under a shade of greenery. Its castle-inspired bath is finished with river-rock shower walls, double vanities, and a walk-in closet. Down a hall in the original wing, an informal living room of stone-covered walls, built-in bookcases, and hand-chiseled mesquite mantels flows into the kitchen and out to a deck with rolling views. The kitchen anchors on an oversized island with a double copper sink beneath an ornate iron pot rack, a gas range in a stacked-stone alcove, double ovens, and a walk-in pantry with a window seat, while a thermal chimney cupola with a copper roof rises above. The dining room seats up to twelve. Upstairs, two bedrooms share a bath off the circular staircase, and a spiral stair climbs to the tower, the home's highest point and its quietest, with panoramic views. A pool table room and a lower-level suite with a full wall of built-in shelving complete the plan.
THE OUTDOOR LIVING COMPLEX
Spring and summer belong outside. A curved heated pool is terraced into the hillside on a travertine deck backed by a stacked-stone wall, with a turf lounge lawn, chaise lounges, and canopy string lights that carry the evening well past sunset. Covered decks and balconies wrap the buildings, each framing its own view of the canyon, one set with a gas grill and picnic dining for long dinners in the open air. Beyond the terraces, five private acres unfold in wildflowers, mature oaks and cedars, wisteria, and stone paths, with a nature trail winding down to a creekbed and a koi pond beside a detached workshop. The vine-covered great-room patio, with its dragon-railing overlook, is where the property announces itself.
WHO STAYS HERE
Lucy in the Sky is built for groups who want their stay to be part of the story. Multi-generational families spread out across four bedrooms and a lower-level suite, couples and girls' trips claim the tower and the library, and brand or corporate retreats find a backdrop unlike anything else in the city. With space for ten and a walkable compound of gathering rooms, it rewards a group that wants to be together and apart at the same time. It is not the right fit for parties or events, and its many staircases make it best for guests comfortable on multiple levels.
THE LOCATION
West Lake Hills sits close-in yet quiet, with downtown Austin only twelve minutes away. The Westlake HEB is six minutes down the road and the Barton Creek Greenbelt is eight, its trailheads and swimming holes ready for a morning out. Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park are about twelve minutes, South Congress fifteen, and the University of Texas and the Austin Convention Center fourteen. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is twenty minutes, Circuit of the Americas twenty-eight, and the Hill Country Galleria sixteen.
