Most people who book This Must be the Place come for the pool and the space. What they find when they arrive is that the property has more going on than the photos suggest: a detached game room that operates as a fully separate building, half a mile of trails through the cedar and live oak woodland, a build-your-own frisbee golf course, a children's playhouse, a trampoline, and a fire pit in the front yard that becomes the center of the evening once the pool day winds down. The Salt Lick is eight minutes away. Jester King is eighteen. Hamilton Pool is twenty-five.
This Must be the Place sits on 7.5 private wooded acres in Driftwood and stands out in the Hill Country rental market for two reasons. First, the back patio setup: a 22-by-14 pool and a covered outdoor living space sharing the same footprint, with the kitchen and dining room opening directly onto the patio through a wall of sliding glass doors. The outside and the inside work as one continuous space, which matters when the group is sixteen people and everyone wants to be in the same general area. Second, the detached game room, which gives the teenagers their own building and gives the adults the pool and the patio to themselves.
THE HOUSE
The main house is a two-story Hill Country craftsman in limestone and sage board-and-batten. The entry foyer opens to a curved walnut staircase with hand-forged iron balusters and a stained glass sunflower window above the front door. Original large-scale portraits of Texas music legends hang throughout the main floor, including a Willie Nelson piece in the dining room that most guests stop and look at. The great room is two stories tall with exposed walnut beams and polished concrete floors. A wall of sliding glass doors runs the length of the back wall and opens completely to the covered patio and pool.
The kitchen works for sixteen people. Two full-size refrigerators, an induction cooktop, a dedicated coffee station, granite countertops, and a walk-in pantry. The formal dining table seats eight. The breakfast nook seats four. The island bar seats four more. The kitchen and dining areas flow together in one continuous space, so the group never has to split across rooms to eat or cook.
The primary suite has two king beds and a bathroom worth mentioning: a freestanding soaking tub by the window, a full slate tile walk-in rain shower with a built-in bench, and a double vanity with vessel sinks and matte black fixtures. Bedrooms 4 and 5 each have a king on the main level with a loft sleeping area via internal ladder, which works well for couples traveling together in a larger group. The upstairs loft lounge has a sectional sofa and smart TV for when the great room is full.
THE OUTDOOR LIVING COMPLEX
The back patio is the center of warm weather life at this property. The covered section has ceiling fans, a six-person outdoor dining table, and lounge seating. The pool is directly adjacent on the open deck with sun loungers. A five-burner gas grill is nearby. The kitchen and dining room open onto the patio through sliding glass doors, so cooking, eating, and swimming all happen in the same connected space. The pool is 22 by 14 and unheated. String lights run through the cedar trees on all sides.
Out front, a stone fire pit and six Adirondack chairs sit in their own circular gravel area with string lights through the live oaks. A rope hammock hangs in the yard. Half a mile of trails winds through the cedar and oak woodland. A build-your-own three-hole frisbee golf course is set up on the property. A children's playhouse with a spiral tube slide and swing set is in the rear yard, along with a full-size trampoline and hanging hammock chairs in a wooded area.
THE GAME ROOM
The building above the garage has its own entrance and operates independently from the main house. Ping pong, shuffleboard, pop-a-shot basketball, a leather sofa, a large TV, a neon sign, and original sports art on every wall. The sixth bedroom is in this building: a queen-over-queen bunk with its own AC. The teenagers claim this space immediately and hold it. That tends to work out well for everyone.
WHO STAYS HERE
Families with kids who need room to spread out. Multi-generational groups where the adults want a good outdoor setup and the younger kids want a trampoline and a playhouse. Large friend groups celebrating a milestone who want one address where everyone fits. Wedding parties in Driftwood or Dripping Springs for a spring or summer ceremony. Corporate groups who want a Hill Country retreat within range of Austin. The property has enough distinct areas that different parts of the group can always find their own space.
THE LOCATION
The Salt Lick BBQ is eight minutes away. Trattoria Lisina and Duchman Family Winery are ten. Jester King Brewery is eighteen. Treaty Oak Distilling, Vista Brewing, Desert Door Texas Sotol, and the Dripping Springs area are all within twenty minutes. Hamilton Pool Preserve is twenty-five minutes with advance reservations. Jacob's Well in Wimberley is thirty-five. Barton Creek Greenbelt is twenty-eight minutes. Barton Springs Pool is thirty-two. Downtown Austin is thirty-five minutes. The airport is forty-eight.
Spring and summer wedding season is strong in this area, with Vista West Ranch, Camp Lucy, and Contigo Ranch all within fifteen to twenty minutes. ACL and SXSW are thirty-five to forty-five minutes in every direction.
